Get Started

Before electronic point of sales (POS) systems became mainstream in restaurants, cash registers were the only way to process payments. Old fashioned cash registers were replaced by electronic cash registers in the 1970's, but these were essentially electronic typewriters combined with a calculator. Needless to say, innovation was bound to happen.

Here at US Merchant Systems, we strive to provide our restaurant clients with modern POS systems to help them stay ahead of the competition. If your POS system hasn't been updated in the past few years, you may want to consider getting an upgrade, as the restaurant industry has undergone many changes in recent years. Let our knowledgeable staff fill you in on restaurant POS systems before you get set up with USMS today!

Older Systems

As mentioned above, modern POS systems didn't begin to take rise until after the 1970's. In fact, it wasn't until the 1990's that restaurants began using computerized software to automate the functions of a POS system. These systems were used exclusively for nearly two decades and are still quite popular in many restaurants across the nation.

These systems are able to process credit and debit card payments much faster than old methods using electronic cash registers. Servers would still have to take the customer's order, put it in the system, then notify the cooks in the kitchen. Because of this, the wait time at restaurants was not improved with this technology.

Tabletop POS Systems

The systems made popular in the 1990's continued to be the POS systems of choice for restaurants until the early 2010's. The introduction of tablet computers made this POS system less attractive, however. Devices such as the PaySaber made it possible to process credit card transactions with a tablet or smartphone.

In fact, many restaurants, like Chili's, have installed tabletop POS systems. While many customers were initially concerned that these devices would hurt the level of service they were accustomed to, they soon realized these systems can improve their dining experience.

Now, servers don't have to bounce back and forth between the kitchen and your table to place orders. You can do it yourself. This makes for a faster service time and servers are able to take on more customers than ever before.

Additionally, these new tabletop POS systems allow customers to do much more than simply place food orders. They are also able to play games or trivia on them. This added entertainment aspect can be heaven sent for some families waiting for their food. This can also bring in additional revenue to your restaurant if you charge a small fee for the games.
